The Mines and Minerals Act of 1957 identifies the beaches of Orissa Sand Complex, Manavalakurichi in Kanyakumari District of Tamil Nadu, as the main monazite bearing area in the country.

It is suspected that 2.1 million tons of monazite has disappeared from the shores of India since 2014. VV Minerals India has been largely held responsible for this. Vaikundarajan, the founder of the sand mining company has been under scrutiny for illegal beach mining.

In the wake of these allegations, the state government has put together an investigating team to look into the matter. However, the locals have expressed their skepticism and requested for a CBI enquiry instead.

Ashish Kumar, the district collector of Tuticorin, was a part of the investigating team. However, a few months into the operation, Ashish Kumar received transfer orders. Many allegations were pointed at VV Minerals India denoting that the orders were forced by the company. However, there is no substantial evidence to prove so.

There have been several allegations of illegal sand beach mining against VV Mineral Mining. Vaikundarajan points out that there is no hard evidence to prove his company guilty.

VV Mineral Vaikundarajan, who set up the business in late 90s, insists that his company is not involved in any illegal activities. He continues to offer his support to the investigating committee and hope that justice will prevail soon.
